I have even read some alchemists were really believing it was a just a process for to make gold out of lesser matter.
But underneath that exterior appearance, it really is an exterior system that *represents* an interior spiritual (for lack of better word) system for the development of understanding and experience of higher reality.
Experiencing the oneness of Reality instead of being stuck within the millions of (dualistic) manifestations within Reality is the ultimate goal
