Christianity and the occult/esoterism?

There was a time when Christians were comfortable with incorporating the likes of the Cabbalah and astrology into their practice. This is in general no longer the case. The people who did this would have seen themselves as devout and committed followers of Christ and the practice was fully integrated with the Church, as can be seen for example in the design of graves and church architecture. The people who reject it today as against the will of God are equally devout and focused.

How can this make sense? Who’s right and why?
Sola Scriptura, sorry, but i’m not. I’ve only been inside a Roman Catholic church once or twice in my life. I’m thinking of Protestant tombs, ceiling paintings and so forth. I’m a Protestant myself, and there’s no room for doubt here.
