If someone has something bad karma they receive during the life they are bad, or they add up all the bad deeds and karma has received in a future life or the life?

So if you make a joke like calling someone an “idiot” but you do not get serious and then say you do not like that. If you have bad karma?

If someone does something bad, do they get karma during the same lifetime they did the bad deed, or do all the bad deeds add up and karma received for them in a future lifetime or lifetimes?
